Job Description

Description of Position

This position has the responsibility of assisting the clinicians and hospital staff in the preparation and dispensing of medication to patients and Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) staff under the direction of veterinarians and clinical pharmacist.

Essential Functions

  • 40% Prepares prescriptions medications for all inpatient and outpatient clients in a timely and accurate manner per request from licensed DVMs for patients in a timely and accurate manner
  • 25% Communicate with and assist other hospital staff members and clients in person, on the phone, and through email.
  • 10% Maintains appropriate records of perpetual inventory log for controlled substances including stocking and managing inventory of the hospital automated dispensing cabinets
  • 10% Completes annual training and maintains proper technique compounding sterile and non-sterile drug manipulation in accordance with USP 795, USP 797, and USP 800 including, but not limited to: sterile intravenous admixtures, chemotherapiesy, capsules, suspensions, injectables and ophthalmic preparations.  
  • 10% Maintain a clean working environment in the dispensary and equipment and stocking supplies as needed
  • 5% Other duties assigned

Responsibilities

  • Provides customer service by answering phone calls and assisting clients.
  • Assists VMC/CVM personnel with prescription orders, department orders, questions and other dispensary related items
  • Participates in âœtech-check-tech❠double check procedure.
  • Orders and maintains inventory of essential pharmacy items
  • Assists Clinicians and other staff members to ensure the service maintains efficient operations and a focus on internal and external customer service.
  • Provides a variety of training and teaching experiences for students as indicated.
  • Works in tandem with hospital clinical pharmacist to ensure processes meet state and federal requirements for dispensary status. 
  • Ensures that all charges for medication, materials and supplies are correct and entered in the VMC system.
  • Completes training follows procedures for infectious disease control training and sanitation activities to insure a consistently clean working environment.
  • Provides excellent customer service to clients, staff, DVMS, and students Enter credits for items returned to the dispensary
  • Knowledgeable of state and federal pharmacy regulations/rules, including controlled substances.

Salary range: $21.69 to $26.45/hr

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 months experience in a pharmacy or veterinary setting handling medications. 
  • Incumbents must not have been convicted within the past 5 years of a felony or within the past 2 years of any crimes associated with the unauthorized use of controlled substances.  
  • Strong customer relations and communication skills, including knowledge of general pharmacy operations.  
  • Ability to read, write and speak fluent English in order to; fill accurate pharmacy orders and communicate with various personnel.  

Preferred qualifications:

Registered with the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy. Certified within 2 years of hire date.
