Position Summary:
Washtenaw Community College maintains a long-time partnership with the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters (UA) and works closely with the labor union and their education and training department to support their Instructor and Apprentice Training Programs. The Learning Experience Designer will work within the office of WCC /UA Instructional Technologies, a department under the office of Skilled Trades Training and part of the Division of Economic and College Development. The role involves collaborating with the United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters to assist their instructors in developing in-class, hybrid, and remote courses within the Canvas Learning Management System ( LMS ). In this capacity, the position will offer guidance and counsel on optimizing support for UA students, leveraging existing resources effectively, and innovating the creation of new learning materials. The goal is to enhance the overall educational experience for UA members by providing expert advice on strategies that empower both instructors and students within the UA framework.

This is an outside funded position that should last at least two (2) years. No continuing employment rights are implied beyond such funding. This position is required to work on campus 4 days per week.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Design & Development
  • Apply a range of design methods and learning theories to learner-centered course design.
  • Create courses and programs that prioritize diversity and equity, accessibility, student engagement, and culturally relevant course design.
  • Provide leadership, consultation, and coaching to UA instructors on backwards design, authentic assessment creation, facilitation of online community building, and incorporation of interactive learning objects.
  • Provide course teams and UA faculty partners with relevant examples that can serve to spark ideas and creative solutions that increase student comprehension.
  • Collaborate with UA subject matter experts to migrate existing Blackboard courses to the Canvas LMS .
  • Seek and propose innovative solutions to educational design challenges.
  • Create documentation and graphic organizers to guide faculty in creation and refinement of materials and assessments that will become part of the online experience.
  • Use HTML coding, branding, and template designs to create a consistent and engaging student experience.
  • Review course design decisions to ensure that activities, and resources are appropriately aligned with learning goals and desired course outcomes
  • Make research and evidence-based recommendations for course improvement.
  • Build interactive content using authoring tools, mapping, HTML coded interactives, community building tools and/or other applications.
  • Develop engaging videos and/or graphics using productivity software such as Articulate Storyline, Padlet, Canva, Adobe Suite, Office 365, and other engaging academic tools in conjunction with creative media team.
  • Research and implement emerging instructional design practices, instructional strategies, student engagement, and optimization of the learning management systems for online instruction.
  • Demonstrate strong knowledge of W3C standards, Section 508, accessibility, and equity standards through innovative ideas and practices to enhance course design.


Professional Development & Innovation Advancement

  • Create asynchronous and synchronous professional development courses for faculty development.
  • Lead the development of a comprehensive course design model that merges course development and faculty online instruction.
  • Provide education and training to create a culture of learning within the UA to support the evolving modernization of design.
  • Research and innovate the best practices for developing mobile courses.
  • Research the future of digital learning, online innovation, trends in higher education, and student support to provide ideas that advance the course design process.
  • Engage in thought leadership/conferences that promotes best practice and innovation in online learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.


FLSA: Salary - Exempt

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in educational technology, instructional design, or e-learning and development or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Canvas development and training.
  • Demonstrated vision and passion for creating learning experiences that place a high value on diversity, equity, and inclusiveness.
  • Deep understanding of learning theories, instructional design methods, and learner-centered design principles
  • Demonstrated expertise in applying a learner-centered approach to course design.
  • Demonstrated expertise in learner experience development, including multimedia development, digital videos, web design, graphic design, and media accessibility.
  • Strong background in online pedagogy and instructional methods, including online community building, equity in online learning, student engagement and facilitations, and authentic assessment development.
  • Extensive experience designing in learning management systems (Blackboard, Canvas, etc.) and across multiple modalities.
  • Experience using data to optimize course design processes and enhance the student experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing web-based interactive learning objectives (Articulate, Adobe, Office365, etc.).
  • Demonstrated proactivity, independent judgment, leadership, and autonomous work ethic.
  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to think both logically and creatively.
  • Experience in teaching or training.
  • Must be creative, action-oriented, and forward-thinking with experience in successful project management in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Troubleshooting, programming and HTML coding experience required.

Salary/Hourly Rate: $69,542 - $76,496
