University of Michigan Health is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Sustainability Project Manager to provide facilitation, support and guidance for various health system teams engaged in projects and process redesign to improve sustainability. Duties include data collection, reporting, presentation development, stakeholder education and engagement, and tracking progress against stated goals. Reporting to the U-M Health Sustainability Officer, the successful candidate will help manage, analyze, implement, and report on environmental sustainability initiatives for the health system. These initiatives may include recycling, waste reduction, composting, energy conservation, transportation, sustainable food service, environmentally preferred purchasing (EPP) and other programs designed to help U-M Health achieve its carbon reduction and environmental sustainability goals. The Sustainability Project Manager acts in accordance with policies and procedures and exemplifies the mission, vision, and values of U-M Health-Michigan Medicine.

  • Coordinate sustainability-related projects and teams to ensure goals and timelines are met, appropriate data is collected and reported, and relevant stakeholders are engaged throughout the change process
  • Assist with the creation and evaluation of requests for qualification (RFQs) and proposals (RFPs) for sustainability-related improvements. 
  • Establish data collection processes to identify opportunities for improvement and contribute to sustainability reporting for internal and external requirements, including annual submission to Practice Greenhealth's data platform as one example
  • Assist U-M Health departments with their data collection and analysis efforts, to determine economic and environmental returns on investment
  • Lead and staff multi-disciplinary teams and workgroups of key stakeholders to inform and support organization-wide sustainability priorities
  • In collaboration with U-M Health sustainability and communications teams, assist with the development and deployment of sustainability workshops, in-services, case studies, and other communication tools to educate internal and external audiences about U-M Health's sustainability initiatives and progress
  • Assist with the development and management of content and information on U-M Health's sustainability websites and information-sharing platforms 
  • As assigned, work collaboratively with employees and leaders across the University of Michigan organization, including the U-M Office of Campus Sustainability and U-M Health regional network to support and align sustainability efforts.
  • Collaborate with and assist in the management of outside vendors and partners to further U-M Health Sustainability goals.
  • Other duties as assigned in furtherance of U-M Health's sustainability and ESG initiatives.
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, economics, finance, healthcare or business administration, engineering, English, clinical field or equivalent experience.
  • Combined 2-4 years of corporate, non-profit or government project management, sustainability and/or data analysis experience, can include relevant course work
  • Project management
  • Data collection with strong ability to create and manipulate Excel spreadsheets and other data collection and reporting tools
  • Meeting planning and facilitation
  • Strong organizational and self-initiation skills
  • Ability to work professionally with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Oral and written communications, including website management, and presentation creation
  • Large non-profit healthcare, corporate, or government sustainability experience.
  • Experience with environmental, social, and governance reporting frameworks like Global Reporting Initiative and data collection platforms.
  • Background and understanding of voluntary environmental reporting protocols, like the GHG Protocol, Scope 3 Protocol, and other tracking is a plus.
  • Understanding of Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) strategies and reporting.
