The Staff Toxicologist (Specialist) independently provides expert scientific support in the areas of toxicology, human and/or ecological risk assessment and exposure assessment, along with a variety of more difficult tasks directly related to toxicology and risk assessment. As a Staff Toxicologist Specialist you will have the opportunity to:

  • Prepare and review complex Human Health Risk Assessments (HRA) and/or Ecological Risk  Assessments (ERA)
  • Interpret and apply public health and/ or environmental standards to assess public health risks and ecological hazard from exposure to multiple media (e.g., soil, water, air, biota) contaminated with chemicals from varied types of sites and/or releases to ensure that all potential exposure pathways are considered and/or evaluated
  • Independently prepares, reviews and evaluates intricate sampling and  analysis plans, and similar technical documents integrating scientific, toxicological and ecological  principles to meet essential DTSC needs

Desirable Qualifications We Look For:

  • Experience reviewing or performing human health risk
  • Advanced knowledge in one more subspecialties for Toxicology and/or Risk Assessment
  • Post-doctoral experience relevant to mathematical modeling
  • Post-doctoral training, published research, or working experience in areas of high-throughput  toxicology assays
  • Experience is public speaking
  • Ability to effectively communicate in writing
  • Experience in developing plain language documents
  • Experience in developing online training modules
  • Participated or led programs focused on cumulative impacts of pollution, health disparities,  or other vulnerabilities on affected communities
  • Participation in a mentorship program
  • Involvement in Professional societies in relevant areas

Statement of Qualification (SOQ) Instructions

A Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) is required for the hiring manager’s review. Applications submitted without an SOQ may be disqualified.
