Who are we?

FSDB is a state public school available at no cost to eligible pre-K and K-12 students who are deaf or hard of hearing, blind/visually impaired or deafblind, including boarding and transportation services. FSDB is nationally recognized for its comprehensive educational services, designed for the unique communication and accessibility needs of students. FSDB also provides educational outreach programs for children ages 0-5 and their families. The FSDB experience provides students with the edge to do more, be more, and achieve more.

 

 

How you will make an impact

The incumbent of this position reports directly to the Director of Interpreter Services and is responsible for providing American Sign Language (ASL)/English interpreting services for deaf/hard of hearing individuals and other associated stakeholders in a variety of settings.

  • Provide direct sign language interpreter services for school-related activities, events, and off campus classes as needed. Effectively use signed and spoken languages to ensure equal access for all individuals including, students, parents, staff, and stakeholders. Provide interpreter services for meetings in a variety of settings which may include, but are not limited to classroom settings, admissions meetings, parent meetings, IEP conferences, student evaluations, testing situations, staff training and/or workshops, departmental and academic team meetings, administrative meetings, Board of Trustees meetings, mental health assessments and appointments, legal situations, medical settings, and occupational settings. Off campus settings requiring interpreting services may include classes at First Coast Technical College and St. Johns River State College.
  • Provide students and staff with information and support concerning the role of interpreters and how to effectively work with interpreters. Provide high-quality language modeling for all students, parents, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Maintain a timely and accurate flow of information to the Director of Interpreter Services and the SJRSC Coordinator of Interpreters. Maintain an individual schedule for daily interpreting assignments and ensure accurate and timely completion of timesheets.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must possess verbal English skills and ability to travel independently;
  • Must demonstrate high levels of assignment attendance and timeliness for interpreting assignments;
  • Must consistently demonstrate professionalism and maintain positive attitudes about all aspects of interpreting assignments;
  • Must demonstrate skills in interpreting in a variety of educational settings for students, staff, and stakeholders;
  • Must possess knowledge of the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and demonstrate the ability to apply it when interpreting for all individuals involved in school-related activities and events;
  • Must recognize differences in cultural perspectives of communication and demonstrate value for a diverse population of stakeholders;
  • Must demonstrate the ability to tailor interpreting services based on the need for cultural mediation, hearing status, language background, and diversity in language usage;
  • Ability to maintain a Valid State of Florida Driver's License and meet FSDB requirements to operate a state vehicle according to the Transportation Policy;
  • Ability to participate in shared rotation of an on-call schedule to provide after-hours interpreting services for the Health Care Center, Police Services, and other campus needs as they arise;
  • Ability to complete training and administer skills acquired during CPR and CPI;
  • Ability to attain American Sign Language proficiency in accordance with FSDB O.P.P.1.24

 

 

Qualifications

EIPA of 3.5 or above; or NAD 4/5; OR RID National Interpreter Certification; or FRID QA Level 3 state credentials. SLPI rating of Advanced Plus - Superior Plus Range.

 

Preferred

Bachelor's Degree or higher in ASL/English Interpreting or a related field of study

Three years’ experience interpreting for Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals

Three years’ experience working as an interpreter in an educational setting

NAD/RID National Interpreter Certification

EIPA credentials of 4.0 or higher and ability to obtain NAD/RID certification within three years

 

 

Sign Language Requirements

Applicants who are selected for hire will be required to possess an SLPI rating of Advanced Plus - Superior Plus Range proficiency in sign language upon hire.

Please note: The Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind provides education to acquire sign language skills .

 

Hiring Salary Range

10 month position: $46,330.40 - $51,800.00 annually. This range is inclusive of verified education and Interpreter credentials.

Hours Monday – Friday, 40 hrs per week, shifts vary
