Job Description

Summary of Duties:

The Canadian Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) helps Canadian companies navigate the complexities of international markets and make better business decisions. Part of Global Affairs Canada, the TCS is on the ground in more than 160 cities worldwide. As a free service of the Government of Canada, the TCS helps Canadian companies to prepare for international markets, assess their market potential, find qualified contacts and resolve business problems. 

 

Under the supervision of the Consul and Trade Commissioner in Phoenix and general direction of the Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner in Los Angeles, the incumbent will: 

 

  • Apply knowledge of assigned industry sectors and local market conditions in Arizona, as well as the broader Southwest United States (includes Nevada and Southern California), to respond effectively to Canadian business client inquiries.
  • Proactively build relationships with local contacts and participate in local and international trade conferences and events to identify opportunities for Canadian business clients.
  • Organize and execute initiatives that connect Canadian clients to local business and innovation opportunities.
  • In collaboration with the foreign direct investment promotion team at the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles, support local companies seeking to invest in Canada.
  • Provide support for high-level visitors and contribute to broader Canadian economic advocacy objectives and initiatives in Arizona.
  • Prepare annual business plans for assigned industry sectors and report on results achieved. 

 

Area of Selection:

This selection process is open to applicants legally residing in the Phoenix, Arizona region at the time of appointment. The Government of Canada will not reimburse relocation costs under any circumstances. 

 

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to the duties required by the position or a degree from a recognised university

or

  • An equivalent combination of education, training  and/or work experience in a related field will be considered in place of Bachelor’s or college degree.

 

Language:

  • An advanced proficiency level in English (reading, writing, comprehension and speaking).

 

 

Experience:

  • At least five (5) years of experience working in a business development role with external clients.
  • Experience in developing relationships with clients, stakeholders and influencers, and in obtaining, preparing, and conducting meetings with private sector clients (e.g., business to business meetings, sales meetings, cold calls, etc.).
  • Experience in project management.
  • Experience in providing strategic advice, briefings, and written reports to management and/or clients on business issues.
  • Experience in an office environment with working knowledge of productivity tools such as Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), Client Relationship Management (CRM) software, internet research and databases.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in French both orally and in writing.
  • Extensive experience working in international business development.
  • Experience in working within a public or government organization.
  • Experience and contact networks in one or more of the following industry sectors: advanced manufacturing, agriculture and agri-food, aerospace, defence and security, information and communications technologies (ICT), life sciences, and mining.
  • Experience in working with under-represented groups in business, including women, 2SLGBTQ+, Indigenous, Black and other racialized minority entrepreneurs.
  • Knowledge of commercial issues and opportunities in the Southwest United States, with a focus on Arizona, that could have an impact on Canadian business interests.
  • Knowledge of Canada and the Canadian economy, including the strengths and challenges experienced by Canadian exporters.
  • Knowledge of the priorities and programs of Global Affairs Canada, including the Trade Commissioner Service. 

Operational Requirements:

  • Hours of work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 37.5 hours per week. The successful candidate must be willing to work overtime on occasion and when required.
  • Location of work: Phoenix, Arizona. This position will start as remote work reporting to the Consulate General of Canada in Los Angeles and then will transition to full-time on-site presence at the new office of the Consulate of Canada in Phoenix once operational. A hybrid work arrangement consisting of remote and on-site presence will be considered later.
  • Willing and able to travel, as required. 

 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization:  Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening:  Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
