Position Summary

The role of Engagement and Annual Giving Programs is to build a strong and lasting connection between the university and its community, nurturing a sense of pride, belonging, and active involvement. In coordination with the Senior Director, Class and University Programs, the Senior Associate Director, Student Engagement, will set the strategy for alumni, parent, and student engagement on behalf of the Alumni Association. This includes oversight and development of events and volunteer opportunities under the umbrella of the Alumni and Parent Admission Program (APAP) that are in alignment with WashU Admissions efforts.


This position will also supervises the two Associate Directors and one Coordinator.

Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • In coordination with the Director, Class and University Programs, sets strategy for Student Engagement programs and ensure alignment with Admissions, EAGP and University Advancement missions.  Attends regular meetings with Admissions leadership and staff. 
  • Supervises (2) Associate Directors and (1) Coordinator. Provides appropriate training and management of schedule as projects and tasks are presented. Recommends annual goals for each staff member and ensure goals are met.  Assists team members as needed with the planning and execution of events such as Summer Send Offs, Admitted Student Receptions, Admission Events, Student Engagement Events, and more.
  • Database: Leads efforts to improve, manage and maintain the APAP volunteer database, The APAP Volunteer Portal, as well as the College Fair database, now all housed in the Undergraduate Admissions database, Slate.
  • Develops policies and procedures to record accurate and up-to-date information about volunteer roles and activity in University Advancementâ™s database.  Ensures that team members working with alumni and parent volunteers are entering appropriate information into UA database.
  • Volunteer Engagement and Management: Oversees new engagement opportunities, management, and stewardship of alumni and parent volunteers. This includes analyzing engagement data to understand new opportunities, working on targeted requests from Admissions, and enhancing volunteer training.
  • Internal and External Communication: In collaboration with EAGP Marketing and Communications team, oversees marketing, communication, stewardship, social media, parent-to-parent messaging, recruitment, and training materials.
  • Develops messaging for University Advancement Colleagues so they understand the goals for Student Engagement well as the full suite of volunteer opportunities available for alumni and parents.
  • Supports other programs in Class and University Programs as needed including but not limited to Reunion and Founders Day

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in volunteer management.
  • Five to seven years of experience in alumni relations, higher education, event planning, public relations, marketing, or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated strength in organizational and project management skills.
  • Prior experience or emphasis in not-for-profit technology/database.
  • Prior experience in event planning and management.
  • Prior experience in budgeting.
  • Knowledge in higher education.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of Washington University, matched by a desire to reflect its excellence. 
  • Demonstrated strength in organizational and project management skills.
  • Superior interpersonal, written and oral communication skill. 
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced and complex organizational environment.     
  • Ability to listen carefully, learn quickly, and work effectively.
  • Ability to remain focused on multiple priorities and work collaboratively with colleagues across the University.
  • Ability to stay task-oriented without supervision.
  • Strong work ethic, a sense of commitment, and personal initiative are integral to this role.
  • Familiarity with various types of technology, databases and programs, and/or willingness to learn.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with alumni, parents, students, faculty, and administrators.

Required Qualifications

Bachelorâ™s degree and a minimum of three to five years of related experience.

Salary Range

$65,900.00 - $112,700.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
