JOB SUMMARY: Develops, reviews and implements training to assure that nursing staff are trained to function in a competent, proficient manner in order to meet the needs of adults with serious and persistent mental illness, substance use disorders, and chronic medical problems. 

 

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING:
Education | Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Nursing or other healthcare related field.
Experience | Minimum of three to five years of experience in psychiatric mental health nursing is required, preferably with an additional two to three years of educator experience.
Licenses/Certifications | Must hold a current license as a Registered Nurse, or qualify for same through reciprocity with another state board of nursing.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develops, coordinates and implements educational programs for nursing staff, including ongoing curriculum needs. 
  • Incorporates all current regulatory requirements into nursing education programs. 
  • Works with the Human Resources department to provide training for nursing staff. 
  • Assist the Chief Nursing Officer with corrective actions, coaching and counseling employees in all situations related to their work performance. 
  • Plans and coordinates all aspects of orientation for nursing department staff (RN, LPN and MHT).
  • Plans and presents recertification classes and continuing education programs to enhance and maintain the knowledge of hospital employees. 
  • Develops or revises continuing education offerings related to psychiatric and medical care, based on requests or identified needs by management and other staff members. 
  • Communicates scheduled classes in a timely manner and offers flexibility in scheduling. 
  • Maintains complete and accurate records, and submits educational information to the Human Resources Department. 
  • Monitors the progress of nursing staff in meeting educational goals and maintains training data base. 
  • Ensures that staff competencies are assessed and documented during the orientation period and annually. 
  • Develops and presents in-service and/or continuing education, as requested by the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Participates in the Performance Improvement program by monitoring specific aspects of patient care as required by the Nursing Department. 
  • Develops competencies relating to work task expectations in accordance with specific nursing staff positions, and ensures these are updated and current.
  • Develops self-studies that enhance the delivery of nursing care at the facility. 
  • Works cooperatively with nursing school programs in the community to provide the opportunity for clinical practice development and placement for students. Provides orientation and additional training to nursing students and functions as a mentor during clinical rotation. Works collaboratively with nursing instructors to ensure that clinical practice goals are met in a safe and positive learning environment. 
  • Collaborates with the nursing management team in complying with Joint Commission standards, state, federal and local policy requirements. 
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies as required. 
  • Ensures all teaching materials are up to date, meet all regulatory requirements, and are current and evidence-based. 
  • Regularly goes to all units and monitors all nursing activities to identify any deficiencies and develop teaching plan to address all deficiencies, including both clinical practice and documentation 
  • Flexible hours are expected and may include weekends and nights.

  • Ability to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND CONDITIONS:
Works in a clean well-lit environment with fluctuating temperatures. Requires substantial periods of work utilizing a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Requires lifting and carrying equipment and supplies weighing up to 35 pounds; requires pushing and pulling equipment and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds; requires walking and standing; requires sitting; requires the ability to negotiate stairs; requires the ability to lift patients in and out of bed, wheelchair, and/or stretcher; requires the ability to reach or bend frequently; requires visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Potential for exposure to blood and/or body substances and hazardous materials requiring observance of Standard Precautions and safe handling practices.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/TRAVEL:
This job primarily operates independently in a facility. This job is performed in a correctional facility, client site or counseling center including minimum, medium or maximum security levels. Employees are exposed to some level of risk and/or harm by inmates including exposure to blood borne pathogens. Employee is expected to work in accordance with all security rules and regulations to minimize the risk of danger and/or harm to themselves or other employees. This position may require travel depending on specific needs.
