Job Description

The HLA () is a full-service hospital with an annual caseload of approximately 2000 cases. Competition and pleasure horses comprise the majority of the caseload (85%), with the remaining caseload consisting primarily of small ruminants, camelids, and companion swine. In addition to internal medicine, specialty services include surgery, ultrasound, and equine sports medicine. The HLA is supported by outstanding diagnostic imaging, cardiology, dermatology, ophthalmology, and anesthesiology services. Sophisticated diagnostic facilities include a pulmonary function laboratory, endoscopy, gastroscopy, ultrasonography, new AquilonTM CT with the QalibraTM setup, 3T MRI, nuclear imaging, overground endoscopy, a comprehensive veterinary diagnostic laboratory, a state-of-the-art isolation unit, and an indoor sports medicine arena. Cummings School also provides reproductive, equine, small ruminant, and food animal field services in Woodstock, CT.

We seek an enthusiastic, team-oriented clinician who will provide outstanding patient care, client care, and service for our referring veterinarians. The service is currently composed of three LAIM specialists. A full-time technician is dedicated to the service and a team of technicians provides 24-hour medical care to hospitalized animals. Intern and resident training are important components of this position, with four LAIM residents currently enrolled in the program. Daytime medical emergency and intensive care cases presented to the HLA are admitted and managed by the Large Animal Medicine service. An important component of this position’s clinical service will include direct supervision of interns and residents on nights and weekends in the manageme nt of in-patients and the admission of new cases.

Clinical track appointments are weighted to clinical and educational activity, but faculty members are still expected to engage in sufficient research and scholarly activity to remain at the forefront of their discipline.  Unmodified track appointments are intended for faculty members who wish to develop a strong independent or collaborative research program supported by external funding, in addition to excellence in clinical and educational activities. Current research strengths in LAIM include respiratory medicine, clinical pharmacology, and critical care medicine. School research strengths include clinical and translational research, infectious disease and global health, and animals, humans, and societal impact.

The distribution of activities for the position is dependent on appointment track and will include 22 weeks of after-hours and weekend emergency service (0.42 clinical FTE), providing direct supervision of interns and residents on nights and weekends in the management of in-patients and the admission of new cases.  Other activities depending on track would include daytime clinics with the LAIM service, research and scholarly activity, classroom and laboratory teaching, and administrative service. The exact distribution of other activities will be determined in consultation with the faculty members. Faculty are initially provided 4 weeks of vacation, plus one week of other time off. The university also recognizes 14-15 other holiday or bonus days.

Qualifications

Must hold a DVM or equivalent degree.  Completion of a residency program in large animal internal medicine approved by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) or the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine by the effective date of appointment is required. Experience in emergency case management is expected. Board certification is required at, or no later than two-years following, the date of hire. Demonstrated interest and aptitude in teaching at all levels is required. Passion for and productivity in clinical research is desirable.

Preference for a clinical track position will be given to those with excellent clinical skills and potential to develop a strong clinical reputation. Preference for an unmodified track position will be given to individuals who have the potential or demonstrated ability to develop an independent or collaborative externally funded research program. Experience and interest in research relevant to the strengths of the department or the school are considered an asset. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
