What You Can Expect

Our Electrical and Instrumentation Technician (E&I) Trainee will be an enrolled student, working part-time learning their craft at the University of Iowa campus, assisting ENGIE E&I Technicians in the maintenance and improvement of the University's utility infrastructure. Every day, you will be engaged in activities ranging from working on cybersecurity documentation to fieldwork alongside technicians, while acquiring traditional E&I technician skills.

As a Trainee you will be a part time employee working approximately 20 hours a week during the semester and 40 hours a week during school breaks. You must have the availability to fit your working hours between 7:00am to 3:30pm, Monday through Friday. This trainee role is expected to run through December 31st 2024.

Your daily tasks will include working on drawings, writing standard operating procedures, performing software installations, managing account administration, and other projects tailored to your current educational experience. Additionally, you'll assist and learn proper troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of equipment used for monitoring electric utility systems. This includes but is not limited to low and medium voltage power monitoring equipment, control systems, fan status and ventilation systems, pumping systems, battery systems, various instrumentation, motor starters, motor drives, controls, valve actuators, network switches, and PLCs. You'll also gain experience in pulling and terminating fiber, configuring instrumentation, industrial switches, and archiving configurations.

Under the direct supervision of ENGIE Technicians, you will assist in installing and wiring control systems and equipment up to 600 volts. You'll also work around voltages of up to 35,000 volts on utility systems under the guidance of high-voltage electricians. Throughout your training, you'll develop safe work practices, including Lockout Tagout procedures. You'll learn to determine jobsite work sequences, necessary safety procedures, coordinate outages, estimate expected downtime, manage the process of system restoration, update SCADA systems, and maintain Historians.

What You'll Bring
  • This, this employee must be a currently enrolled student in one of the following Post-Secondary programs: Associate of Applied Science degree program(s): Industrial Maintenance Technology, Electromechanical Technology, Industrial Automation, Network System Administration, or System Administration. Or, a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology or similar degree
  • You will have academic or professional knowledge of the maintenance of electrical utility monitoring equipment, instrumentation, and control systems, including the proper use of hand tools and common diagnostic equipment
  • You will have knowledge of occupational hazards of the electrical trade and construction, and the required safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, and other environmental conditions
  • You have gained knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations, and guidelines of local, state, and national electrical and safety codes, equipment manufacturers, and others
  • You can read and understand blueprints, schematics, control system drawings, and repair manuals, analyze system problems, collaborate to recommend and implement system changes. You effectively communicate verbally and in writing to other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, students, staff, and the general public
  • You use Microsoft Office and Outlook to communicate with reports, email, and organize necessary data in spreadsheets. You can interpret and maintain wiring diagrams, schematics, updates system logs, drawings, flowcharts, and documentation on utility systems.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations

  • Must possess a valid U.S. driver's license/clean driving record
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all ENGIE ethics and safety policies
  • The position consists of both indoor outdoor work and will expose the employee to weather conditions
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Must be physically capable to hear and understand audible alarms, detect changes in noise levels of equipment and portable radio communication
  • Capable of frequently standing; walking; balancing; sitting; climbing (ladders, stairs, ramps, catwalks, and the like as required); kneeling; pushing; pulling; lifting (min. 50 lbs.)
  • Capable of performing repetitive motions as required
  • Required to have eyesight corrected at 20/40 to accurately read and interpret such as but not limited to instruments, gauges, and manuals
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space (crawl spaces, shafts, small, enclosed areas, pipes, and the like) as required
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses

Compensation

Salary Range: $20.00 - $24.00 USD hourly
