Job Description

Alcala County Pet Resort is an industry-leading pet boarding, dog daycare, dog grooming, and dog training facility. We seek a motivating, customer-focused, employee-focused General Manager who is passionate about dogs and cats and operating a growing small business.

Schedule and location:

  • This role will be onsite at 1273 Crest Drive, Encinitas, CA 92024, but some work may be performed remotely.
  • This salary-based position will have normal operating hours of 9am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Work will also be scheduled on weekends, with Saturdays being a stronger possibility.
  • You will also be expected to manage our team outside of those regular shifts. We appreciate candidates who have some flexibility with their schedules.
  • Our operating hours are 7am to 6pm, 365 days per year. The position is designed to be 40 hours per week. Due to business needs, some weeks may involve working more or less than 40 hours.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • The General Manager will oversee all aspects of daily business operations to ensure all policies and procedures are followed.
  • All animals boarding, playing, visiting the groomer, or training at the resort will only have humane and ethical care.
  • Ensure that every resort staff member can work in a professional, positive, and welcoming environment.
  • Providing white-glove level customer service for our clients.
  • Conducting the final phases of the recruitment process with new staff members.
  • Training and mentoring our amazing team of pet care professionals.
  • Resolving customer concerns in a timely and complete manner.
  • Reaching budgetary goals by assisting the management team of each department.
  • Act as the primary point of contact when needed.
  • Drafting and conducting performance reviews for staff.
  • Conducting weekly benchmark meetings with staff.
  • Setting goals and running reports to track metrics for each department.
  • Review safety protocols at the resort, including the company’s injury, illness, and prevention program.
  • Acquire deep knowledge of each service provided at the resort and the software required to manage those departments.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with local veterinary offices, breeders, and rescues.
  • Scheduling for team members and monitoring and correcting employee timesheets.

Ideal candidate:

  • While prior professional or volunteer experience working with dogs or cats is not required, we would prefer a candidate who has, at minimum, previously owned a dog. The quality of the care we provide at the resort is very important to us, and a pet owner may have a stronger understanding of why that level of care is important to our clients.
  • We work hard to attract and retain the best talent in San Diego. The General Manager must be able to manage and motivate a diverse workforce. We prefer a candidate with at least two years of staff management experience.
  • For over twenty years, Alcala Country Pet Resort has met and exceeded client expectations. We prefer a candidate who understands the relationship between pet and pet owner and the importance of exceeding customer expectations in a small business environment.
  • A candidate who can independently problem-solve and operate a business indefinitely will be strongly considered.
  • As General Manager, you may be responsible for short-notice situations at the resort. Complex problems or emergencies may arise related to pets in our care, staff on-site, or clients visiting the facility. You may need to come into the resort quickly to resolve time-sensitive, complicated issues.

Compensation / Benefits:

$60,000 - $75,000 / annually (depending upon experience)

  • Paid time off
  • Professional development assistance
  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance
  • Dental Insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Employee discount
