Job Summary Dispense pharmaceuticals at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Medication Dispensary in accordance with Illinois State and Federal Pharmacy laws and regulations. As the Pharmacist on-duty, provide oversight and direction for all activities as they relate to the practice of pharmacy in an academic hospital environment.
Duties & Responsibilities - Pharmacy Operation
- Provide oversight and direction regarding all activities and all employees as they relate to the practice of pharmacy while serving as the Pharmacist.
- Dispense pharmaceuticals in accordance with Federal and State of Illinois policies and regulations.
- Compounding Medications
- Certify cleanroom personnel and sterile compounding competency.
- Compound sterile and non-sterile medications as needed.
- Consultation and Collaboration
- Provide faculty, staff, students, and clients with pharmaceutical information regarding the clinical aspects of the pharmacy.
- Research and respond to drug information questions posed by faculty, staff, students, and outside clinicians.
- Education and Instruction
- Provide clinical instruction to house officers and students related to pharmaceuticals.
- Participate in teaching visiting pharmacy students and Parkland veterinary technician students during rotations at the VTH.
- Assist with training of incoming faculty, house officers and staff.
- Develop Pharmacist corner monthly articles.
- Update Canvas training for: Clinical (Clinicians, Interns, Residents), Dispensary Staff, Students, Veterinary Technicians, Locum and Guests
- Other duties as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
Additional Physical Demands Persons allergic to animal dander, hay, or straw may experience discomfort due to the location within the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This position includes working at counters, tables, and shelving. Position may involve moving 5-gallon carboy containers that may weigh up to 50 pounds to stock shelves and move supplies to the counter for delivery persons needing them. Handles glassware and medications stored in glass.

Minimum Qualifications Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an ACPE approved College of Pharmacy with the ability to apply for an IL Registered Pharmacist license.
Minimum 3 years practicing as a registered pharmacist. Graduate of an ACPE approved school of pharmacy with eligibility to apply for an IL Registered Pharmacist license.
Preferred Qualifications Training specifically in veterinary pharmacy and/or compounding through relevant coursework and/or CE.
Minimum of 5 years practicing as a registered pharmacist
Experience in a veterinary teaching hospital pharmacy
Experience teaching pharmacy and/or veterinary students
Experience compounding sterile and/or non-sterile dosage forms
Diplomate of the International College of Veterinary Pharmacists (DICVP)
Fellow of the Society of Veterinary Hospital Pharmacists (FSVHP)
Pharmacy teaching certificate
Current Illinois pharmacist license
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Knowledge of pharmacy computer systems and pharmacy practice rules and regulations
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to apply them to critically solve problems and work collaboratively with faculty and staff
- Veterinary drug information skills to research and answer questions of varying complexity regarding medication use in animals
- Knowledge of veterinary pharmacy-specific rules and regulations
Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible.The budgeted salary range for this position is $110,000 to $120,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
